Judge

Mark Roberts

Mark Roberts received his bachelor’s degree in  graphic design at California Polytechnic State University San Luis  Obispo. Later, he continued his formal art education at the California  Art nstitute. At the Institute, analyzing the visual world in terms of  shapes, values and edges was heavily stressed. This teaching has been  with him ever since. Roberts earned his Master of Fine Arts in Painting  from the Academy of art University in San Francisco, where he has taught  figure drawing for the Illustration department from 2005-2014.  Presently, Roberts teaches drawing and design at Las Positas College in  Livermore.

Most of his life, Roberts has pondered the  following questions. Why am I compelled to create art? What is Beauty?  What is the purpose of art? As he matured in his art, he realized that  being able to reproduce reality wasn’t enough in itself to create art,  there had to be the added elements of beauty and mood. Only recently it  has occurred to him that his life’s art journey is actually a spiritual  quest. Being aware of this allows Roberts to consciously heighten the  beauty and emotional impact of his paintings.
